Telephone books in the United States have white, blue and yellow pages. The white pages list people with phones by last name, the blue pages contain numbers of city services, government agencies and public schools. Businesses and professional (专业的) services are listed in a special section, the yellow pages. To make a long-distance call, you need an area code. Each area in the U. S. has an area code. The area covered by one area code may be small or large. For example, New York City has one area code, but so does the whole state of Oregon. If you want to know the area code of a place, you can look it up in the area code map, which is printed in the front of the white pages.

There are a lot of publlic telephones in the US. They have their own numbers. If you are making a long-distance call on a pubic telephone and run out of money, give the number on you phone to the person you are talking to, then hang up the receiver, and he can call you back. If you make a long-distance call and get a wrong number, call the operator and explain what happened. This means that you can make the call again to the right number without having to pay more money.

Where can you find the telephone number of a city council (市议会) in the telephone book?

A.In the blue pages.

B.In the white pages.

C.In the yellow pages.

D.In a special section.

正误判断题: In the UK, in business situations, when you meet someone for the first time
you shake hands and say, "How do you do?". This is not really a question, and the reply to it is another greeting such as "How do you do?" or "Hello" or "I'm very pleased to meet you" or, if you have met the person sometime before, "It's good to see you again". You don't shake hands every time you meet someone, you just greet them. If you are invited to someone's house for dinner, it is usual to take a present - some chocolates or flowers or, if you know them quite well, a bottle of wine. If you do not know the host well, don't be the last person to leave. Telephone the next day to thank the host for the meal. English people don't like to talk about personal things, and tend to avoid religion, politics and money. Good topics for small talk (闲谈) are the weather, holidays, weekend activities, gardens and architecture (建筑物), especially houses and homes. When you go to a pub or bar, it's usual to take turns to buy a drink for everyone in your group and pay for the drinks when you get them from the bar and before you drink them. 听力原文: In the early 1800s, the paper industry was still using rags as its basic source
of fiber as it had for many centuries. However, the rag supply couldn’t keep up with the growing demand for paper. The United States alone was using 250 thou sand tons of rags each year. And a quarter of that had to be imported. It was clear that a new source of fiber was needed to keep up with the demand for paper. The answer to this problem turned out to be paper made from wood pulp, something that was abundantly available in North America. In Canada, the first wood pulp mill was set up in 1866, and it was immediately successful. But while wood pulp solved the problem of quantity, it created a problem of quality. Wood contains a substance called lignin. The simplest way to make large quantities of cheap paper involves leaving the lignin in the wood pulp. But lignin is acidic and its presence in paper has shorted the life expectancy of paper from several centuries for rag paper to less than a century for paper made from wood pulp. This means that books printed less than a hundred years ago are already turning yellow and beginning to disintegrate, even though books printed much earlier may be in fine condition. This is bad enough for the older books on your bookshelf, and it poses a huge problem for libraries and the collections of government documents, too.

The speaker mainly discusses ______.

A.the growth of the printing industry

B.the history of paper-making

C.the use of paper in the 19th century

D.the composition of wood fiber

听力原文:M: Say, Lisa, what are you watching?

W: An old Japanese film. I'm going to spend next year there, so I'd better start familiarizing myself with the culture (23) .

M: You mean you are accepted into the program?

W: Sure was.

M: That's wonderful. You must be very-excited.

W: Excited and nervous. You know I owe a lot to Professor Whitehead. He wrote a letter of recommendation for me and he bought me some tapes and books so I can work on my basic conversation skills (24) .

M: How much Japanese can you understand?

W: Not a lot right now. But I signed up for Intensive Japanese this semester.

M: I wish I were as talented as you are in foreign languages. I'd love to study abroad.

W: Then why don't you? The university has lots of overseas programs that don't require mastery of a foreign language. The tuition is about the same. You just have to be the kind of person who is willing to accept new culture and who can also adapt to a different kind of life style. (25) .

M: Really? I might check into this.

W: You won't regret it.

School children will have a more difficult time skipping classes in the future if a softwa
re program that lets parents monitor their children catches on.

A start-up company called School-Soft, based in Cupertino, Calif., unveiled an upgrade to its software that lets parents monitor their child's performance in school over the Internet.

The company has developed software that runs on Corp.'s popular Palm-Pilot handheld computers. School-Soft resells the Palm-Pilot to schools, pre-loaded with School Soft software, plus programs to run on a school's network server. School teachers can then enter into the Palm-Pilot student attendance data, grades, homework assignments, activities and the like, which is sent to the school's central server. Later, parents with either Internet access or just a telephone can access the school's server for updates from the teacher. Before the software upgrade, parents could only access the system via the telephone.

Jim Weldon, School-Soft founder and chief executive, said the company at present has an installed base of about 330 schools around the United States, and that the software was used for children in kindergarten all the way up to secondary school. "In high school, parents really want to track activities, grades, etc.—how do they get on track to go to college?" said Weldon. "Children also have access as well to their academic records...Sometimes you don't know where you are."

When asked if many children have objected to their parents using the software, Weldon said that most are aware of the advantages the software can provide, such as letting them know about grades and performance issues in school—long before report cards arrive.

The old copy of the software______.

A.is internet based

B.is telephone based

C.is well accepted

D.is well programmed
